VOCAL CLASSES
The following regulations govern vocal classes (in addition to specific rules where appropriate):
1. (a) Vocal classes are divided into three levels Junior - 16 years and under Senior - 20 years and under Open
(b) Vocal Musical Theatre is treated as a separate category. This category can be found at the end of the vocal section.
(c) COMPETITORS MUST REMAIN AT THE SAME LEVEL IN ALL CATEGORIES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN AWARD CLASS. This class can be found following the Vocal Musical Theatre classes and is opened to any age
(d) No individual shall compete in more than FOUR vocal solo classes at his/her level, plus one Quick Study and/or Sight Reading class at the same level.
2. When "own choice" is specified, competitors will be judged on the appropriateness of selection and, when more than one selection is permitted, on program arrangement. Unless specified otherwise, all groups of songs (more than two) are to be considered as part of a recital program, not a mini-concert.
3. In the Junior Vocal Section, the language used is optional. In the Senior Vocal Section, use of the original language is encouraged and may be taken into consideration by the adjudicator when awarding marks, but the usual language is acceptable. In the Open Vocal Section, use of the original language is obligatory when the original language is English, French, German, or Italian. from General rules (12)
4. In the Junior Vocal Section, all classes are for UNCHANGED BOYS VOICES, unless specified for changed voice.
5. Competitors entering classes V114, V115, V116 and V117 must be active members of a church choir.
6. Competitors should familiarize themselves with Rules 2, 6, 10, 11, 13 16, 23, 24 and 36.
SENIOR VOCAL SECTION
V200 SOLO, ART SONG, FEMALE 18 years & under (T) $34.00
Own selections. Time limit 10 minutes. Choice to be made from any one period (baroque, classical, romantic, or contemporary), not necessarily the same composer, any language from the concert repertoire. Competitors will be judged on the discrimination shown in their selections and on the program arrangement with regard to contrast, appropriateness, keys, etc., as well as on technique and interpretation. To be considered as an excerpt from a concert recital. The pieces must have relevance as a group and will be so judged. FOLK SONGS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THIS CLASS. V201 - SOLO, ART SONG, MALE 18 years & under (T) $34.00

V218 - SOLO, ARRANGED FOLK-SONG, ANY VOICE 18 years & under $32.00
Own selection of two arranged folk-songs. Time limit 8 minutes. Competitors who select songs in a language other than English or French should present an English translation at the adjudicator's desk prior to the performance. Accompaniment in the traditional or original form or with appropriate instruments is encouraged. Explanation may be given provided the explanation and performance do not exceed time limit. Rule 13(c) does apply.
V219 - SOLO, TRADITIONAL FOLK-SONG, ANY VOICE 18 years & under $32.00
Own selection of two traditional folk-songs. Time limit 8 minutes. Competitors who select songs in a language other than English or French should present an English translation at the adjudicator's desk prior to the performance. Accompaniment in the traditional or original form or with appropriate instruments is encouraged. Explanation may be given provided the explanation and performance do not exceed time limit. Rule 13(c) does NOT apply. Competitors will be judged primarily on the basis of interpretation. Vocal technique will be of secondary consideration.

V223 - SOLO, OPERETTA, ANY VOICE, 20 years & under $34.00

Own selection of one aria from any oratorio. Time limit 10 minutes. The selection (including the name of the oratorio) and timing are to be shown on the entry form. Selection from masses, cantatas, magnificats, etc. are acceptable in this class.
V226 - DUET, FEMALE, 18 years & under $32.00
Own selection (excluding opera). Time limit 5 minutes.
V227 - DUET, MALE 18 years & under $32.00
Own selection (excluding opera). Time limit 5 minutes.
V228 - DUET, FEMALE & MALE, 18 years & under $32.00

V229 - DUET, ANY VOICES, 20 years & under $32.00
Own selection (excluding opera). Time limit 5 minutes.
V240 - W.H. SCRIVENS TROPHY CLASS (T)
Open to winners of Classes V200, V201, V202, V203, V204, V205, V206, V207, V208, V209, V210, V211, V224 and V225. Competitors are required to perform selections in the class they represent. See Rule 31.
OPEN VOCAL SECTION
V300 - ADULT SOLO, NOVICE CLASS, FEMALE VOICE $36.00
Own selection of two contrasting numbers from the concert repertoire, excluding grand opera. Time limit 8 minutes. Entry is limited to those who have not previously entered a Kiwanis Music Festival, National Capital Region Open Vocal Class. Those entering this class are excluded from all other solo vocal classes except for sight reading and quick study. Please state selections and time on entry form.
V301 - ADULT SOLO, NOVICE CLASS, MALE VOICE $36.00

Own selections. Time limit 15 minutes - ONLY the vocalist will be adjudicated. V312 - SOLO, CONCERT RECITAL, ANY VOICE, OPEN (T) $41.00

Own selection of three numbers, one of which must be an aria from any opera or oratorio. Other selections may be from the standard concert repertoire. The group may contain both an opera and an oratorio aria, but may not contain more than one of each. This is not a concert group, and will not be so judged. Time limit 15 minutes. Competitors in this group may not enter either Class V325 or V327.
V325 - OPERATIC SOLO, ANY VOICE - OPEN (T) $41.00
Own selection of one or two arias from any opera(s). Time limit 15 minutes. The selection(s), opera(s) and timing are to be shown on the entry form. Competitors in this class may not enter Class V320.
