POP VOCAL CLASSES

NO BROADWAY, LIGHT CLASSICAL OR OPERA WILL BE PERMITTED IN THIS CLASS.

THE MATERIAL MUST BE CHOSEN FROM CURRENT OR PAST POPULAR REPERTOIRE.

JUDGING WILL BE BASED ONLY ON THE QUALITY OF VOICE AND PRESENTATION.

POP VOCAL IS TREATED AS A SEPARATE CATEGORY. THESE CLASSES MAY NOT BE USED TOWARD ELIGIBILITY FOR CLASSICAL VOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS. SCHOLARSHIPS IN THIS CATEGORY ARE AWARDED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE ADJUDICATOR.

RULES

*These rules are specific only to the Pop Vocal category.*

1. The Festival is reserved for amateurs. The definition of an amateur is that he or she does not derive his or her principle source of income from either teaching or performing professionally. Student teachers/performers who teach and have less than 10 students on a yearly basis may enter the Open category.
2. All entrants must comply with the criteria for all categories regarding their age and months of study. Failure to do so will lead to disqualification.
3. The age must be determined as of April 1, 2008.
4. Scores are not necessary but the adjudicator would prefer to follow a score. No photocopies of copyrighted material will be accepted however a handwritten manuscript or a computer generated manuscript will be accepted.
5. The accompaniment must be either a solo instrument (i.e. piano or guitar) or a "pre-recorded track". The "pre-recorded track" can not have any backing vocals and must be on a CD or a cassette tape. You will present two copies of the tape or CD to the vocal secretary cued to the start of the tracks. All tapes must be on side A. No live background vocals will be accepted. If the background/accompaniment track is a MIDI file then it must be transferred to a CD for presentation.
6. No participant will be allowed to perform out of sequence. If there is an unresolved conflict then the performer will perform at the end of his/her category. Both selections will be performed consecutively.
7. Total time limit for all pieces being performed in a category is 8 minutes.
8. The adjudicator's decisions are final and are not to be questioned by any participant, teacher or parent. Failure to respect this rule will result in the participant being disqualified and awards returned. Any complaints or protests must be made in writing to the Festival Office. The adjudicator must not be approached.
9. The participant must use the sound system, effects and microphones provided by the Kiwanis Music Festival. A CD player and a cassette tape recorder will be a part of that sound system.
10. Competitors must receive a mark of 80% or more to receive a first-place certificate and a mark of 75% or more to receive a second-place or third-place certificate. At the sole discretion of the adjudicator, a first, second and/or third place certificate may not be awarded.
11. a) It is strictly forbidden to take photographs or to make sound or video recordings during the performance.
b) Competitors are entitled to free entry into the hall for the class(es) in which they are enrolled.
c) Competitors should be in the hall 15 minutes before their session begins, and remain until after the adjudications.
12. a) The time of each competition and the order of competing will be shown in the Official Program which will be on sale prior to the opening date of the Festival at a price fixed by the Management Committee.
b) The Management Committee reserves the right to alter the time of competition if circumstances warrant.
c) The Management Committee should be advised of withdrawals in advance of the competition.
d) The time set for each performance may be changed through cancellations or other unforeseen circumstances.
13. Competitors are responsible for supplying their own accompanists. There is a list of accompanists.
14. a) No performance shall commence until a signal is given by the adjudicator.
b) The adjudicator shall have discretionary power to stop any performance at any time and to instruct the omission of repeats.

CLASSIFICATION OF LEVELS

Please note that "months of study" has been removed from Classification Levels.

Novice - 10 years of age and under

Junior A - 13 years of age and under

Junior B - 15 years of age and under

Intermediate A - 16 years of age and under

Intermediate B - 18 years of age and under

Senior - 20 years of age and under

Open - there will be no age or lesson restrictions

****No one is allowed to enter in any category more than one age category higher than his/her own age, except for Open which is available to all ages.****
