VOCAL CLASSES
The following regulations govern vocal classes (in addition to specific rules where appropriate):
1. (a) Vocal classes are divided into three levels Junior - 16 years and under Senior - 20 years and under Open
(b) Vocal Musical Theatre is treated as a separate category. This category can be found at the end of the vocal section.
(c) COMPETITORS MUST REMAIN AT THE SAME LEVEL IN ALL CATEGORIES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN AWARD CLASS. This class can be found following the Vocal Musical Theatre classes and is opened to any age
(d) No individual shall compete in more than FOUR vocal solo classes at his/her level, plus one Quick Study and/or Sight Reading class at the same level.
2. When "own choice" is specified, competitors will be judged on the appropriateness of selection and, when more than one selection is permitted, on program arrangement. Unless specified otherwise, all groups of songs (more than two) are to be considered as part of a recital program, not a mini-concert.
3. In the Junior Vocal Section, the language used is optional. In the Senior Vocal Section, use of the original language is encouraged and may be taken into consideration by the adjudicator when awarding marks, but the usual language is acceptable. In the Open Vocal Section, use of the original language is obligatory when the original language is English, French, German, or Italian. from General rules (12)
4. In the Junior Vocal Section, all classes are for UNCHANGED BOYS VOICES, unless specified for changed voice.
5. Competitors entering classes V114, V115, V116 and V117 must be active members of a church choir.
6. Competitors should familiarize themselves with Rules 2, 6, 10, 11, 13 16, 23, 24 and 36.
VOCAL - MUSICAL THEATRE
Competitors will be judged primarily on the basis of interpretation as well as discrimination shown in their selections and on the program arrangement with regard to contrast and appropriateness. Vocal technique will be of secondary consideration. Selections must be made from Music Theatre (movies may be acceptable providing the selections portray a character and do not become a nightclub performance). The festival committee reserves the right to disallow any selections that are inappropriate. Selection that are primarily patter (spoken) (ie. Over the Moon - Rent) will not be allowed. Minimum props and costume are encouraged providing change can be made quickly between numbers. Costumes and props will NOT be judged. Musical Theatre is treated as a separately category. These classes MAY NOT be used toward eligibility for classical vocal Scholarships. Scholarship in this category are awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator. Open to winners of classes V602 and V603.
V623 - GEORGE STEWART MEMORIAL TROPHY (T)
Open to winners of classes V604.
V624 - COMPANY OF MUSICAL THEATRE TROPHY CLASS (T)
Open to winners of classes V605, V606, V607 and V608.
V625 - JEANNETTE DAGGER TROPHY (T)
Open to winners of classes V610, V611, V612 and V613.
V626 - MARY LOUISE BURNS MEMORIAL TROPHY (T)
Open to winners of classes V614, V615, and V616.

MUSICAL THEATRE ENSEMBLE
1. The ensemble must consist of a minimum of three contestants up to a maximum of 10 contestants. Contestants are allowed to enter a maximum of three ensemble number in the same age group. A contestant may enter in all three age groups to a maximum of 3 ensemble numbers in each age group. The show tune music chosen by the ensemble can only be entered in one age group level.
2. The ensemble classes are divided into three age groups(a) 12 and under(b) 19 and under(c) Open Class The average of the ages of all participants must equal or be less than the category entered. Any age may enter the open category. Names and ages of each member of an ensemble must be attached to the entry form for the 12 and under and 19 and under class. Ages to be verified on request from festival office.
3. Music may be any music theatre show tune.
4. All competitors must be costumed, and the use of props is essential when called for.
5. A maximum of one minute of dialogue is allowed.
6. The incorporation of dance is advised when called for.
7. An ensemble may use additional accompaniment in addition to a piano (ie drums, percussion, saxophone) but ensemble must provide instruments and musicians and set up time prior to ensemble number is limited to 3 minutes. The use of prerecorded music as an accompaniment through a sound system is NOT allowed.
8. The use of sound equipment for sound effects is allowed. All equipment will be provided by ensemble with maximum set up time of three minutes.
9. The use of special lighting is NOT allowed.
10. The use of backdrops will not be judged and ensemble will have a maximum set-up time of three minutes.
11. Contestants will be adjudicated on singing, dancing and monologue performances as well as on costume and props use. As this is a musical theatre category the triple threat (to sing, dance and act) is being sought by the adjudicator.
12. Each ensemble number may last to a maximum of 10 minutes.

This class is open to all age levels.
