STRINGED INSTRUMENTS
NOTE: The following is a summary of the rules as they apply to stringed instruments. It is strongly recommended that all the General Rules (printed in the front of this syllabus) should also be studied.
1. A competitor entering in any one level must stay in the same level in all classes, except where no class is offered at the same level. In this case a competitor may go up one level.
2. A competitor may not enter a graded class that is lower than the RCM grade they have already completed.
3.Please state the grade currently being studied on the entry form.
4. A student may not re-enter a level or grade class if they have been awarded a first place for two consecutive years in that class.
5. Unless otherwise stipulated all own choice selections must be chosen from the current Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto Syllabus of the grade level of the class entered. The only class where one piece may be chosen that is a grade higher (RCM) than that of the specified class is in the concert group. Own choice pieces for Concerto, Sonata, or General Solo must be chosen from the specified grade for the class. Competitors who wish to choose a piece not in the RCM syllabus must submit a photocopy of the selection with application forms.
6. Competitors wishing to be eligible for Open Provincial or National Finals must perform a concerto or concerted work. Competitors are eligible to compete at any one of the Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9 or Grade 10 Conservatory levels. In deciding the grade level, competitors:
a) Must be working on repertoire listed at that grade level in the current RCM or Conservatory Canada Syllabi; and
b) Must not have passed Conservatory examinations at that level or higher, before 31 December prior to the Provincial Festival; And
c) Must not have entered more than two pieces above that grade level in any local festival in the competition year. Competitors who enter local festivals performing more than two selections above their listed grade will be considered as working at that higher grade, and therefore must compete in the Graded Competitions at the higher grade level.
d) Competitors who have won an OMFA Provincial class cannot again be recommended for Provincial level competition in the same class but must subsequently receive the adjudicator’s recommendation to compete at a higher level. Non-winners at the Provincial finals may continue to enter the same class as long as all requirements are met.
7. In all classes where the music performed is of the student's own choice competitors must provide an original copy of the work to be performed to the adjudicator before commencement of the class. N.B. Any competitor who does not abide by these rules may be brought to the attention of the Adjudicator before the class in question and the competitor may be considered non-competitive, that is, at the discretion of the Adjudicator, the student may be given adjudication but no mark. Competitors must perform repertoire as listed in the official program. NO CHANGES will be made after the entry has been received. Please read rule #13.
