GENERAL RULES FOR BANDS, LARGE ENSEMBLES AND ORCHESTRAS
Elementary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools - Junior Community, Senior Community - College/University Bands or Winds Ensemble
Each band is required to enter the designated class number as printed. A senior community band will be defined as a band with an aggregate playing experience of three years or more. Bands drawn from more than one school will be classified as a community band. Bands from private schools or other educational institutions will be classified as community bands. Three separate categories of bands will be adjudicated: School Bands, Community Bands (Junior and Senior) and College/University Bands.
AIMS OF THE KIWANIS MUSIC AND DANCE FESTIVAL
The principal objective of the plan is to provide a program that will allow for the wide variation in the capabilities of school and community music groups.
THE RATING PLAN
Gold, Silver and Bronze Standards of Performance are recognized by The Kiwanis Music Festival, National Capital Region.
A GOLD Standard signifies that an Ensemble has achieved excellence in all facets of its performance.
A SILVER Standard signifies that an Ensemble is demonstrating an exceedingly high standard of musical performance.
A BRONZE Standard signifies an above average quality of performance with latitude for improvement. The above three standards are recognized with a certificate.
The number of individual Gold, Silver and Bronze Standards of Performance presented in a given class will be at the discretion of the adjudicators. All ensembles will be evaluated to a "National Standard of Performance". Musical integrity will be the basis of evaluation. Adjudicators will include consideration of stylistic interpretation, intonation, dynamics, attacks, releases, articulations, balance, time, feel improvisation, instrumentation and the variety, quality and appropriateness of repertoire selections. Adjudicators' comments will reflect the total assessment of the performance selections. If time permits, a brief verbal adjudication will follow each performance. A written adjudication will be available following each performance. All Adjudicators' comments will be intended as a guide for the continued development of the Ensemble.
