Failure to comply with any of the provisions of the following rules shall render the competitor liable to disqualification. The competitor will be permitted to perform and will receive an adjudication but no mark or ranking will be given
1. The competitions shall be under the working management of the Festival Association.
ELIGIBILITY
2. All competitions (including Open Classes) shall be restricted to amateurs unless otherwise specified. For the purpose of these competitions an amateur shall be defined as follows: A music student or any person whose principal means of livelihood is not obtained from the performance of music in the particular category in which he/she is competing, even though from time to time such persons are in receipt of remuneration for musical services rendered, but not on a full time basis. Professionals may enter open classes on a "non-competitive" basis only.
3. Members of choral societies, choirs, orchestras and bands may be professionals but must be members in good standing of their respective organizations.
4. Conductors may be either amateur or professional. Conductors shall NOT sing with their choirs nor play with their orchestras or bands.
5. Unless otherwise stated, competitors may enter any class without regard to residence or domicile.
6. In classes where any age limit is set, competitors must not be over the specified age on January 1st preceding the date of the Festival. In a duet, trio or quartet class the age of the oldest competitor will determine the age eligibility.
7. No individual shall compete in more than one entry in any solo or duet class. However, this does not apply to a conductor who may conduct two or more groups in the same class.
8. Substitutions of competitors listed on the entry form may not be made without the approval of the Management Committee. Requests should be directed to the Festival Office.
9. Youth orchestras are composed of members drawn from the community at large, while school orchestras are composed entirely of students of a particular school.
TEST PIECES
10. Where a key is specified, test pieces must be performed in that key; otherwise transpositions are permissible.
11. Where an edition is specified in the syllabus, the specified edition should be used where possible.
12. It is permissible for a competitor to change the order of test pieces provided the competitor informs the secretary and chairman before the class commences.
13. a) In all classes in which the test piece is competitor's "own choice" the title, movements to be performed, composer and timing thereof must be specified on the entry form.
b) Requests for Changes in selections will not be considered. Any changes will be considered non-competitive.
c) One original copy of each "own choice" must be presented at the adjudicator's desk prior to the beginning of the class. PHOTOCOPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY THE ADJUDICATOR - NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. Failure to produce an original copy will mean that the participant will be adjudicated but will not receive a mark.
d) In all classes in which the music is competitor's "own choice" the selection must not be a work presented by the competitor at the preceding year's Festival nor in another class at the same Festival.
14. a) In classes in which the test piece has been set by the Association, repeats are not to be observed unless
specified in the syllabus. (da capo and dal segno passages are not considered to be repeats and shall be played.) This includes quick studies.
b) In classes in which the test piece is competitor's "own choice", repeats may be observed as long as time limits are met.
c) Failure to observe time limits could result in penalty points. Time will be called at the discretion of the Adjudicator. Competitors may be stopped at the end of their time limit and judged on what they have performed.
ENTRIES (see information on completing entry forms)
15. a) All entries must be properly signed by or on behalf of the competitor (all entries 12 yrs and under must be signed by a responsible adult) and sent to the Association, accompanied by the prescribed entry fee.
b) Any qualified official or appointed officer may sign the form on behalf of an organization.
c) A separate completed entry form is required for each class entered.
d) ENTRY FEES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE.
e) The closing date for entries will be as published in the official Syllabus.
f) Entries postmarked or delivered later than the closing date will be penalized.
g) The Management Committee may, at its discretion, refuse any entry which it considers to be incompatible with the aims and objective of the Festival.
MEMORIZATION
16. a) Only in the event of a tie will preference be given to the competitor who performs from memory. All Solo Classes at the Provincial Competition must be performed from memory.
b) Competitors will be permitted the use of music in Quick Study classes without prejudice to the marks given.
PROGRAM PROCEDURE
17. a) In any class, two or more competitors may be selected by the adjudicator to perform in a final test, and the total marks obtained in both the preliminary and final tests shall determine the standing of the competitors.
b) The Management Committee reserves the right to subdivide any class into two or more competitions should the number or character of the entries warrant this be done. In trophy classes, competitors from each of these competitions may be required to participate in a final competition to decide the trophy winner.
18. The Management Committee reserves the right to appoint adjudicators in addition to those announced in the Syllabus.
19. a) It is strictly forbidden to take photographs or to make sound or video recordings during the performance. Exceptions may be made during non-competitive classes at the discretion of the adjudicator.
b) Competitors are entitled to free entry into the hall for the class(es) in which they are enrolled.
c) Competitors should be in the hall 15 minutes before their session begins, and remain until after the adjudications.
20. a) The time of each competition and the order of competing will be shown in the Official Program which will be on sale prior to the opening date of the Festival at a price fixed by the Management Committee.
b) The Management Committee reserves the right to alter the time of competition if circumstances warrant.
c) No change in the order of competing may be made without the approval of the Management Committee or the Adjudicator's Secretary at the session. The Management Committee should be advised of withdrawals in advance of the competition.
d) The time set for each performance may be changed through cancellations or other unforeseen circumstances.
RESCHEDULING PERFORMERS
21. a) If, after receiving the preliminary notice of performance times, a conflict is encountered with another Festival class the Association will attempt to correct it providing that the Association is notified in writing within one week of the competitor receiving his or her notice
b) If other conflict in scheduling occurs for performers or their accompanists the Association will attempt to accommodate the performer as follows:
(i) The order of performing within the class may be altered.
(ii) The performer may be moved to another section of the same class, if one exists.
(iii) If the performer is the only entrant in the class, the class may be rescheduled to a different time and/or date.
c)The rescheduling will be done at the sole discretion of the Kiwanis Music Festival Association, and only after the competitor has indicated that a serious attempt has been made to alter his or her personal conflict.
d) If the conflict cannot be resolved under one of the above circumstances, the competitor will be allowed to perform at another time, but only on a non-competitive basis (that is, an adjudication will be given but no mark or certificate).
PERFORMANCE
22. Except for organ classes, competitors are not permitted to rehearse in official halls in which the competition is to be heard.
23. Competitors are responsible for supplying their own accompanists. See accompanists page.
24. a) No performance shall commence until a signal is given by the adjudicator.
b) The adjudicator shall have discretionary power to stop any performance at any time and to instruct the omission of repeats.
c) In classes where a time limit is specified, this time limit must be observed. The time limit shall be applied only against the time taken to perform competition pieces.
d) All pieces listed in the Program must be performed unless the adjudicator rules otherwise. In Sonata and Concerto classes the movements must be stated on the entry form.
25. A conductor may not be used in ensembles of four players or fewer.
26. a) A chord may be given on the piano at the commencement of each piece of unaccompanied music.
b) Competitors under 17 years of age may have their instruments tuned by a teacher or other person.
c) Competitors must supply their own music stands.
27. a) The public or competitors should not enter or leave a hall once a performance has begun.
b) The Management Committee shall establish the price of admission to all sessions of the Festival.
ADJUDICATION AND MARKS
28. Only the marks of the competitors placing first, second and third will be announced except in classes for Elementary School Choruses, in which all marks will be announced.
29. Adjudicator's written reports shall be given to competitors.
30. Competitors must receive a mark of 80% or more to receive a first-place certificate and a mark of 75% or more to receive a second-place or third-place certificate. At the sole discretion of the adjudicator, a first, second and/or third place certificate may not be awarded.
31. a) A competitor may not compete in a play-off trophy class unless he/she has obtained 85% or more in a qualifying class and has won the class. Competitors for the Irene Woodburn Wright Mozart Trophy shall be chosen at the discretion of the adjudicator. In cases of split classes the winner of the entire class will advance to the trophy class, except in the case of Musical Theatre.
b) A competitor, having qualified under (a) above, shall perform the selection, or a part of the selection, which won him/her the opportunity to perform in the trophy class. The length of the selection to be played is at the discretion of the adjudicator. Competitors who have qualified in more than one class must elect which of the
original classes they shall represent.
c) To be eligible for a trophy awarded without a play-off class, a student must achieve a minimum
mark of 80%.
32. All shields and trophies are the property of the Association and may be held by the winners until requested by the Management Committee.
33. Any complaints or protests must be made in writing to the Festival Office. The adjudicator must not be approached.
SCHOLARSHIPS
34. a) Scholarships are awarded to competitors who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, show most promise of future development in music.
b) Scholarships are not necessarily awarded to winners of first or second places.
c) All scholarships are awarded at the absolute discretion of the adjudicators and the Scholarship Committee.
35. a) Scholarships will be awarded as funds are available.
b) All scholarship awards must be used for the continuance of music education.
c) Awards normally will be paid directly to the scholarship winner.
d) Scholarships will be listed in the Official Program and the awards will be announced.
36. A competitor, to be eligible for a scholarship of $100.00 or more, must enter and compete in:
1. at least one solo performing class; and
2. a second solo performing class; or an ensemble class other than band, orchestra or choir; and
3. a quick study or sight reading class in the category for which the scholarship is being offered and at the highest level of solo class in which he/she is competing, with a minimum mark of 75%.
The above rule does not apply to competitors in classes for music theatre, composition, organ, where insufficient number of classes are offered, or the instruments for which sight reading or quick study classes do not exist.
37. Senior Scholarships of amounts of $750.00 or more will be awarded on an application basis and will be subject to the special rules governing Senior Scholarships. Application forms for Senior Scholarships can be obtained from the Association office.
NON-COMPETITIVE ENTRIES
38. Any person may enter any class in the Festival on a non-competitive basis; that is, for an adjudication but no mark or rating, by marking the entry form NC after the class number. Unless those letters are included, the adjudicator will include that person in the rating.
